The Hudson School of Artists

The movement known as Romanticism influenced not only literature but also art and music.  The Hudson School of Artists were an American group of artists whose work reflects many of the ideas of this movement.  Follow this link to see and respond to their work.

Post a thoughtful response to these works of art that consider the following:
  • What was the source of inspiration for these artists?
  • What message do you think these artists wish to communicate with their work?
  • How do these images connect or relate to the experience of Americans during the early 19th century?

Based on your reading of the introduction to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow answer the following questions...

  1. What expectations did Irving's family have for him?
  2. How did he feel about these expectations?
  3. What life events/experiences profoundly changed Irving's life?
  4. How did his exposure to European culture and ideas influence his literary work?

Hi again E5! I'm glad to see that a few of you have already made your way here and have begun responding to the links about Washington Irving and Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  We will be reading this text when we return on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.  So here are some questions I want you to consider and respond to in your next post...

  • First please visit the Sparknotes: Dark Romantics link below.  What ideas influenced  American writers from the European Romantic period?  Why might these ideas be appealing to a new nation like America?

  • Which do you believe is a more reliable source of knowledge: ideas based on history and reason or ideas based on individual intuition and imagination? Please explain your choice with actual evidence or examples.
Let's keep the conversation going!!
